A Box of Marbles: Part 2The hellish countryside flitted by in a brown and green blur, muted by the night, and only revealed in passing by my headlights. I cursed silently, desperately looking out for the turn into Jordan's driveway, always underestimating the length of this trek from the main road, across the cracked and decrepit pavement, to his residence. It was a drive that I had come to despise, seeing as how I already had a hatred for car rides, ever since my childhood.
The sun was now only peeking over the horizon, shut out by the thick trees, save for the occasional barren patch when it managed to beam through, crisscrossing the road with dim, amber light. I hadn't seen another car for miles, even before turning off the more accessible way, and every time I made the decision to visit, I asked myself the same question: Why in the world would someone choose to live in a place as wildery and unwelcoming as this? However, the answer was always the same. Here, Jordan completely matched his surroundings.
a dangerous hallucinationThe light coming through the window was bright,
much too bright.
Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket
that I nev
